Chris Meloni Returning as Det. Elliot Stabler in ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ This Fall

June 17, 2020

Detective Elliot Stabler is back on the beat.

On Tuesday, NBC announced Chris Meloni would be reprising his role as the beloved character from “Law & Order: SVU” on the new spin-off “Law & Order: Organized Crime," reported People.

While the network had previously announced Meloni would be getting his own series, the show’s title had not been revealed until now.

“Law & Order: Organized Crime” will debut on the network this fall and will air on Thursdays at 10pm, immediately after “SVU” at 9pm.

According to NBC, “Organized Crime” will follow as Stabler returns to the NYPD after suffering a “devastating loss.” The series has already received a 13-episode order.

Meloni was last seen portraying Stabler in the season 12 finale of “SVU” in 2011.

His departure came about abruptly after contract negotiations broke down at the end of the 12th season. Meloni’s character was written out by having him retire from the New York City Police Department off screen. He had not been seen on the series since.

Stabler’s character will be reintroduced to the franchise during the season 22 premiere of “SVU” and will allow fans to finally see him reunite with former partner Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).

Prior to his exit, Meloni and Hargitay starred on “SVU” for 12 seasons together.

Launching in 1999, “SVU” is the longest-running scripted drama in TV history besting both “Gunsmoke” and the original “Law & Order.”

This fall will see Hargitay return for the show’s 22nd season. In February, “SVU” was renewed through season 24.

A premiere date for both “Organized Crime” and “SVU” has yet to be announced.
