4.5-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Southern California on Friday Night

September 19, 2020

A preliminary 4.5-magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California shortly before midnight on Friday night.

The earthquake happened at approximately 11:39 p.m.

According to the US Geological Survey, it was reported roughly 10 miles from Los Angeles.

It was felt in San Diego, Valencia, and the San Fernando Valley.

CNN reports there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Fox notes aftershocks measured 2.1 and 1.6 on the Richter scale shortly after.

Seismologist Lucy Jones said the location of the quake was similar in type and location to the deadly  1987 Whittier-Narrows 5.9-magnitude quake.

It killed several people and cost more than $200 million in damage.

KABC warned that there was a 5% chance the quake on Friday could be a foreshock to a larger quake.
