Whether you love them or hate them, Nickelback  – as a band, as a style of music and an idea – has become synonymous with having a certain kind of taste. And as a result, the band has been the butt of more than a few jokes over the years.

Besides the general jokes, the most recent trend involves Donald Trump’s imagined fandom. Signs that “Donald Trump Likes Nickelback” began appearing at his rallies earlier this spring, and recently a meme of Trump wearing a Nickelback t-shirt has been circulating the Internet. Academia even tried to get in on the teasing. A scientific study published in April attempted to explain why Nickelback is generally thought to be so terrible.

The band has largely remained quiet whenever people make fun of them, which feels like it’s almost all of the time, but they decided enough’s enough on Saturday (Oct 8).  A day before Trump and Hillary Clinton took the stage for the second presidential debate, UK band Royal Blood tweeted that the two candidates combined essentially equaled Nickelback.

Nickelback tweeted back, “Nickelback jokes are like @royalblooduk, they were a lot cooler a couple years ago. Don’t drink and tweet fellas. Stay safe. XO.”

Well played Nickelback.
