As many, many, many women know, there are street harassers everywhere. They yell obscene things or opine about the way a woman looks. They offer unwanted attention and then call women horrible things when their comments are not met with positive reinforcement. Some of the worst ones even grope or attack women.

And perhaps, in what is the saddest thing about this is that these men virtually always go on with their lives, unpunished.

Well, almost always.

Leslie Smith, who is from Pleasant Hill, and some of her friends were headed to The Mint in Hayes Valley for a night out in San Francisco recently. It was a Saturday night, and Smith was standing with a friend of hers when a man walked behind them and grabbed her friend’s butt.

The man was apparently not aware that two of the women in the party were current professional UFC MMA Fighters. One of them, Smith, was the #3 ranked flyweight MMA Fighter in the world in 2013.

According to Cesar Gracie, a friend and fellow fighter, Smith wasn’t about to let that fly.

“I followed him and I was like, ‘Hey, you can’t do that,'” Smith told MMA Fighting. “And he was like, ‘I can do whatever I want.’ And I was like, ‘No, you can’t.’ Then he turned around and spit on me and threw a big right hand.”

Yep, this man decided the best way to end this squabble was to take a cheap shot at a woman.

As Gracie wrote, “He then proceeded to take a punch at what he thought would be an indefensible woman.”

The man missed (probably because he decided to take on someone who literally does this for a job), but rather than cut his losses and walk away, he instead descended further in to the despicability pit and grabbed her hair.

“He had my hair, so I pushed him against a building and then I double-legged him,” Smith said. “I took him down against the cage and then I started to take his back, but his hair was really gross and it didn’t quite feel right.”

Smith is currently injured, and recovering from meniscus surgery. So, instead of further injuring herself, she dropped elbows on him.

“He turned over and I just dropped elbows on him from mount against the building until he started saying, ‘I’m sorry.’ Then I stopped as soon as he said sorry, because that was really the only thing I went over there for.”

As Smith goes on to explain, it’s not at all an unusual thing to be grabbed in public by strangers, but Smith wasn’t trying to draw attention to the ordeal. “At first,” she says, “I was trying to keep the whole thing on the down low and not say anything about it, but after seeing how happy it has made so many women, I changed my mind.”

Smith is widely considered to be a peaceful person, but in this case, she made an exception. Read more on this story at MMA Fighting.
