The BottleRock 2015 lineup is a stunner. With prominent acts like Imagine Dragons, No Doubt, Robert Plant, Snoop Dogg, and Foster the People, it is easy to overlook a less flashy band like The Avett Brothers.  But there is a reason why they are placed fourth on the lineup poster.

Scott and Seth Avett have been making music together since childhood. Growing up in rural North Carolina, the brothers were exposed to gospel songs and traditional folk songs that their father would play for them. During their high school years, the brothers turned their ears to heavy rock and grunge bands like Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  With these influences, the brothers Avett have constructed a mix of country melodies, modern bluegrass, and serious rock & roll. Listeners of The Avett Brothers have created new genres to describe the brother’s music like “grungegrass” or “folk-punk”. Attend a live show and you will understand.

Scott and Seth rotate in singing songs ranging from slow, melancholy ballads to head-banging tunes. The way they blend energetic showmanship, thoughtfulness to their sound, and connect to the crowd is unmatched by many of their peers. Whether you know their songs or not, their live performance will catch your eye and draw you in.

Scott and Seth began writing folk songs under the band name “The Avett Brothers” back in 2002. The Avett Brothers songs are genuine. They use standard chords on primarily acoustic instruments and sing in harmonies that only brothers can posses. The bands song’s touch on life, death, love, and remorse without sounding too sappy or too sullen. It is the words they sing and the sincerity in the way that they sing them that attract many loyal listeners.

The Avett Brothers received national and international acclaim in 2009 after they teamed up with legendary producer, Rick Rubin. In the years following, The Avett Brothers have headlined major festivals (Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo), performed on the Grammy’s with Bob Dylan and Mumford and Sons, and been featured on TV shows (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights, One Tree Hill) and feature films (This is 40).

The Avett Brothers aren’t new to Napa either. They played a dynamic and spirited set in BottleRock’s inaugural year back in 2013. You may have missed them then, but don’t miss them now.

You can catch The Avett Brothers at BottleRock on Saturday May 30th.
