Outside Lands starts in only a couple days, so we tapped our own Aaron Axelsen to give us his picks on the best acts to catch.

Check out his list below of the bands you MUST see at this year’s festival, from a couple Aussie imports to beatmaker or two, and even a couple local acts.

Where: Lands End stage
Time: 5:05pm

  • Dave 1 and P-Thugg formed Chromeo in 2002
  • May 2014 released fourth studio album White Women. Features contributions from Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend, Toro Y Moi, Solange Knowles, Oliver and LCD Soundsystem’s Pat Mahoney. Singles include “Jealous (I Ain’t With It)”, “Over Your Shoulder”, “Sexy Socialite”
  • Last time in SF, they played a sold out show at the Independent in April 2014

  • All female 4 piece from Los Angeles, CA signed to Rough Trade Records
  • January 2014 released their second album, the self titled WARPAINT

Where: Panhandle stage
Time: 4:30pm

  • Real name James Keogh, Vance Joy is a singer/songwriter from Melbourne, Australia, signed to Atlantic Records
  • Played soccer (football) professionally in Australia before quitting in 2008 to pursue a career in music
  • Debut album DREAM YOUR LIFE AWAY will be released September 9, 2014
  • Single “Riptide” is number 5 on the Alternative Songs Billboard chart and currently in Live 105 rotation

Where: Twin Peaks stage
Time: 2:05pm

  • Three piece from Sydney, Australia signed to Mom + Pop Records
  • In 2013 the trio released their debut album Howlin’. Major single is “Come Save Me”
  • Have played three times in SF to sold out shows: Popscene (2013, Debut), the Independent (2013), Fillmore (2014)

Where: Twin Peaks stage
Time: 3:30pm

  • 22 -year-old Harley Strenten is a beatmaker from Sydney, Australia signed to Mom + Pop Records
  • Debut self-titled album was released in 2012 and re-released in 2013 with as a deluxe album with additional tracks
  • Recently collabarated with fellow Aussie Chet Faker to release a 2013 EP called LOCKJAW


VIDEO: ‘Sleepless’


When: Sunday, August 10
Where: Panhandle stage
Time: 12:00pm

  • Brothers Anaiah and Mikaiah Lei make up the Glendale, CA rock band
  • Recorded their first album together at 15 and 12, with three self released albums to their name
  • The brothers signed to FADER Label and will release their debut album PINK PALMS in October 2014
  • Have played Coachella, two Vans Warped tours, opened for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blur, and Refused

  • English electronic dup comprised of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence
  • Their debut album Settle was released June 2013 and was nominated for Best Electronica/ Dance Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards
  • Known for the popular single ‘Latch’ ft. Sam Smith, which is currently number 7 on the Top 100 Billboard Charts

Where: Sutro stage / the Independent
Time: 2:30pm / 8pm

  • Phosphorescent is the moniker used by singer song writer Matthew Houck who is a Brooklyn, New York transplant from Athens, Gerogia
  • 7th album Muchacho was released in March 2013. It features the hit single “Song for Zula”, which was used in the soundtracks for the films The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and The Spectacular Now

  • For the 2014 Record Store Day, the band released an EP called Song for Zula that features the album version of the song and a four song solo session recorded live at the Oregon Public Broadcasting

  • Tycho is SF native artist/producer/photography/designer Scott Hansen’s music alias
  • Released Awake his fourth studio album March 2014. The album peaked at number 23 on Billboard 200


VIDEO: ‘Montana’


When: Saturday, August 9
Where: Twin Peaks stage
Time: 12:40pm

  • The Oakland/ Berkeley four piece consists of two female and two male members, all of whom met at UC Berkeley
  • Trails and Ways use influences of Brazilian jazz and Latin pop in their music
  • The band released their debut EP Trilingual featuring five songs back in 2012 and are currently working on recording their debut full length album
