This is a story from 2014 – The last update came in 2015 when Corona Del Mar’s principal threatened to cancel the school’s prom if they held the draft again.
At one California high school, prom season means draft season.
According to the Los Angeles Times the boys at Corona Del Mar High School have been holding an NFL-style draft to determine their prom dates.
According to one student, junior and senior boys draw random numbers for the draft but can purchase more desirable draft picks.
This year, one junior paid $140 to get a high first-rank pick so he could select a specific girl, said the student, who is not being identified because of potential school disciplinary action.
Much like a draft in professional sports, a high draft pick allows for you to have exclusive rights to the individual you choose. Many girls at the school “respect the draft” and supporters of it say the draft was not created to objectify, or discriminate against any of the school’s students.
But the prom draft has also drawn complaints from female students, he said. Last year some junior girls were upset that junior boys were asking sophomore girls instead of them
The school’s principal has spoken out against the draft and has urged parents to speak with their children about why it’s not OK.
