Ten Must-See Music Videos from 2010

From giant mouse-trap-style obstacle courses to a tipsy Jake Gyllenhaal playing tennis and a schoolyard playground fight, we’ve compiled ten music videos we hope you caught in 2010. And in case you didn’t, make sure you check ’em out before the year is up!

  1. The Black Keys – “Tighten Up”
    Simple concept, kick-ass video. These guys manage to make three minutes on the playground into something awesome to watch again and again! If I didn’t have a crush on Dan and Patrick before I saw this video, I sure do now. Love it!

  2. Linkin Park – “Waiting for the End”
    Amazing use of technology here- the special effects and digital manipulation are off the charts. Would you expect anything less from Linkin Park? These guys know how to keep their fans from getting bored, and with a ton of hits over the past few years, we can safely say their innovative tendencies will entertain you while waiting for your holiday break to start!

  3. OK Go – “This Too Shall Pass”
    I used to play “Mouse Trap” at home on rainy days. This is kinda reminiscent of those days, except ten times more awesome. Globes? Check! Falling Piano? Check! Paintballing? Check! Geekdom taken to a whole new level? Yes! Watch the whole thing for the full effect.

    . . . and bonus video “White Knuckles”
    It’s hard to follow up the Rube Goldberg falling dominoes machine, but this video plays on a similar concept – take something simple and fun from childhood, geek it out, add some small trained dogs and rock out.

  4. Kings of Leon – “Radioactive”
    For the first single off their latest album, Kings of Leon go back to their Southern roots and do what they do best. Great guitars that reflect the spirit of the place the Followills call home. It’s just a feel-good song and the video totally embodies the same vibe. Good for a rainy day.

  5. MGMT – “Congratulations”
    WTF? Weirdo chicken-ostrich-dinosaur monster + desert + MGMT = strangely fantastic. I’ve watched this video a number of times and still don’t totally get it. Maybe that’s the point – just be fascinated and dig the song.  Something about this video makes me wanna phone home, too.

  6. Vampire Weekend – “Givin’ Up The Gun”
    Futuristic tennis, anyone? Finally, a Jonas Brothers project that isn’t cringe-worthy. This superbly directed video (by The Malloys)  features the likes of Joe Jonas, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lil’ Jon and RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan.  Combine that with the short and sweet songs we’ve come to love from Vampire Weekend and it’s obviously the makings for something spectacular.

  7. Cee-Lo “F!@#$ You”
    We loved this song when the video was just the words-on-a-blue-screen version. Seriously, you should have heard how often we were playing this song in our offices at the station! But now that Cee-Lo has an official video starring one foul-mouthed little kid, it just got even better. Well played, Cee-Lo. Well played.

  8. My Chemical Romance – “Na Na Na”
    So if this video is any indication, the true lives of the fabulous Killjoys contain roller skates, muscle cars, guns that shoot laser beams, dynamite, and camping. Uh, where do we sign up? The first track released from their new album is a preview of good things to come in 2011!

  9. Gorillaz – “Stylo”
    Speaking of muscle cars, Gorillaz takes the basic cop car chase to a whole new level with a high-tech blend of animation and uh, Bruce Willis, not to mention two sweet rides – the Gorillaz’ Camaro and Bruce’s El Camino. It almost seems like a lost scene from a Quentin Tarrantino flick, which is a good thing.;

  10. Arcade Fire – “Suburbs”
    This clip plays more like a short film than a music video. And it’s no wonder, with director Spike Jonze behind the camera.  While the video was still in the making, Spike vaguely confirmed that the project was about “friends growing apart” and that it was shot somewhere near Austin, Texas. It’s a look at teenage kids in the ‘burbs, but so much more. Totally intriguing.;
