Find out more about the local bands selected to perform this summer at BFD!

Scene of Action

Dubbed “”one of the Bay Area’s ten best new bands,” by Live 105’s own Aaron Axelsen,  local band, Scene of Action has been generating some heavy buzz recently. Originally from Berkeley (Wooh! Go Bears!) Bay Area label/recording studio Popsmear records brings us this East Bay 3-piece and winners of the NSSN 2009 local band contest, out of over 200 entries! This is “Sexception” from their latest album 20 Minute Hourglass, released last September.  Their next show is 4/22 in Vacaville at Cheers!.

Spin Magazine calls Geographer “One of the three undiscovered bands that you need to hear now,” and here at Live 105 we agree. From San Francisco on indie label Tricycle Records this is “Can’t You Wait?” from their 2008 album Innocent Ghosts. You can check them out this June at BFD or 4/23 at the Cafe du Nord in San Francisco.

Northern Son

Soundcheck’s Aaron Axelsen was so impressed with Northern Son that he decided to add them to the  BUCK O-FIVE showcase at the Voo Doo Lounge in April and the 2010 BFD local stage. From the South Bay, they include members of the now defunct  and once popular local band My Former Life. You should check them out on 4/26 at the “Buck O Five” show at the Voodoo Lounge in San Jose.

I Am Empire

Named one of the best unsigned bands in America by Alternative Press, I Am Empire is a heavy rock band out of San Jose. They have become a regular fixture on Radio Soundcheck. You can see them for free at The Blank Club in San Jose on May 5th or wait until BFD.

The Holdup

The Holdup first garnered attention in the summer of 2008 with the release of their first EP. The band was signed by independent label Dub Rock Records shortly thereafter. They opened for Afroman at the Shattuck Down Low on 4/20 and are playing a show on 4/30 with Eek A Mouse at the Rockit Room in San Francisco.

I The Mighty

Unfortunately I Am Mighty was having some technical difficulties with their video at the time this blog was being written. Here is a picture to clue you in. According to their MySpace they tell stories of love and war and sing about sexual angst. Sounds interesting. You can see them 5/1 in Walnut Creek at the Red House with A Night in Hollywood or listen to them on Soundcheck.

Veil Veil Vanish

Veil Veil Vanish’s debut album Change In the Neon Light is out now and their single of the same name has been played on Radio Soundcheck. The album was produced by Atom who has worked with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Cribs, and Maximo Park. They’re touring So-Cal right now, but you can see them this year at BFD!

Leopold & His Fiction

NPR says that they “exude a certain kind of folk-tinged, backwoods charm that makes them more than just a straight up rock n roll band.” Signed to Native Fiction Records, this local band is one of my favorite local bands. Leopold made their official debut this March with its album Golden Friends and the cover art is amazing. The record is not bad either. If you can’t wait til BFD, you could make the trek to Santa Cruz on 4/24  at the Crepe Place with Deer Tick.
